I will once again be offering my Lucene Boot Camp training session at ApacheCon US this year. ApacheCon is in Oakland this year and is celebrating 10 years of the ASF. In addition to my training, there are a number of Lucene/Solr/Mahout/Tika/etc. talks scheduled during the conference as well as a Lucene meetup (free). Lucene and Solr training at ApacheCon

Just a reminder that Erik and I are offering Lucene and Solr training at ApacheCon Europe next week. My class is a 2-day hands-on training on Lucene designed to get you up and working with Lucene and provide information about where to go next. Erik’s class is a 1-day session on getting up and running with Solr.

Also, note both Erik and I will be at the Lucene meetup on Tuesday night!

So, if you are in or near Amsterdam early next week and need some Lucene/Solr training or just want to talk search with Lucene and Solr over a beer, drop in.

Looks like an interesting crowd is forming for the Lucene meetup at ApacheCon EU this year. Even if you aren’t attending the conference, you can still go to the Meetup. We’ve got a lot of the Lucene ecosystem projects covered by the looks of it: Lucene, Solr, Mahout, Tika, Droids. Hope to see you there.

Also, I’m doing a non-Lucene related talk this year with my wife, Robin, (she clearly is the star of the talk) called “The Programmer’s Guide to Health, Fitness and Nutrition“. Here’s the gist: I’m a programmer and fitness buff, my wife’s a Nutritionist and Health Coach. For a long time, I didn’t have a clue on how to eat or be healthy, subsisting on the typical programmer’s (and everyone elses) diet of soda, carbs (can you say Pasta leftovers?) and junk food. Even after I met and married Robin, I still persisted in my ways, figuring I could just exercise off the weight and exercise my way to better health. You know what? That doesn’t really work for people who sit at a desk all day (and often late into the night), especially as we age.

Want to know what changed my ways and has helped me be healthier, happier and more productive? Register for the conference, and attend the talk to find out. (You didn’t think I would give it away here, did you?) OK, I know, let’s be realistic: you should go to the conference for all the other great talks about Apache technologies at the conference, but do make some time to think about the other parts of your life beyond code, too!

ApacheCon Goodness this Week

Lots of goodness this week at ApacheCon, at least when it comes to Lucene, Solr, Mahout, Tika and Hadoop (i.e. the Lucene eco-system). There’s 2 full days on Hadoop, with lots of coverage of all the pieces that go into Hadoop. There’s also a full day of Lucene related talks, plus Erik and I are both doing Solr and Lucene training classes. I just hope my voice holds out.

At any rate, if you’re going to be in New Orleans next week and you want to learn more, stop in.

Lucene Boot Camp at ApacheCon US 2008

Just a quick reminder that there is just over one week left before Lucene Boot Camp at this year’s ApacheCon.

This year, it is a 2 day training, but for those who want to, they can sign up for the first day of Lucene Boot Camp, and then attend Solr Boot Camp on the second day. I am going to structure the class such that the first day is more high-level stuff (but still with some coding) while the second day will be much more hands-on. Thus, for managers, CTOs, non-programmers, who just want to understand Lucene and Solr, they can easily plan on attending 1 day of each.
