Java 1.5 and Lucene

The Server Side has some more fuel for the ongoing debate on the Lucene development mailing list on the move to Java 1.5.  Seems like a poll should be taken to see what people have installed and whether they are interested in moving to Java 1.5.

I think part of the issue is due to the fact that Lucene is always kind of plowing ahead (like other Open Source projects) and there isn’t much interest in people maintaining old branches.  Patches only ever get applied to the head (not that anyone is preventing this from happening, it’s just not the practice) and the general attitude seems to be onward and upward.  If branches were maintained, then people could backport 1.5 patches to the 1.4 code w/o any problem.  Maybe Lucene needs to find some committers who are interested in maintaining previous branches…
The main thing I want from 1.5 is the performance and that you get from the JVM, not the JDK, so I guess I am not too concerned about upgrading to 1.5 (although I don’t mind either).
